Hand holding a tennis racket grip, showing how the handle sits in the palm

Grip size is the distance around the handle. See all our tennis and padel calculators. In the UK and Europe it is labelled L0 to L5 (or 0 to 5). In the US it is given in inches.

How to measure your hand

Hold your playing hand open, fingers together. Measure from the middle crease of your palm straight up to the tip of your ring finger. The result is roughly your grip size in inches.

L24 1/4108
L34 3/8111
L44 1/2114
L54 5/8117

For padel players: padel handles are generally not offered in L0–L5 sizes. Use your tennis measurement as a guide to how many overgrips feel right, and coaches can check that a player's fingers just touch the palm without overlapping. FIP caps padel handles at 50 × 50 mm.

If you are between sizes, go smaller. An overgrip adds roughly one size (about 1/16 in), but a grip can't be made smaller.

Frequently asked questions

What grip size is L2?
L2 is 4 1/4 inches, roughly 108 mm around the handle.
Is it better to have a grip too small or too big?
Too small. You can build a small grip up with an overgrip, but you can’t reduce a grip that’s too big, and an oversized grip makes you squeeze harder.
Do padel rackets have grip sizes?
Padel handles aren’t usually sold in L0–L5 sizes. Players adjust thickness with overgrips, and the FIP rules cap the handle at 50 mm wide and 50 mm thick.
